As of this writing, Roman Reigns is beginning to close in on 500 days as WWE Universal Champion. By the time Reigns walks down the aisle to defend his title at the Showcase of the Immortals, The Head of the Table will have easily eclipsed Brock Lesnar’s 503-day title reign that lasted from April 2017 to August 2018, where Reigns took the title away from Lesnar. It’s easy to see that WWE wants to make Reigns become the most dominant champion of the modern era, and with this version of Reigns, he deserves to be seen as the top guy in the company. But sooner or later, WWE knows that they have to take the title off of Reigns and place it on someone else on the SmackDown roster.
Here’s the humongous, 800-pound elephant in the room: as yours truly sees it right now, there is no one – and Mr. YLP Himself says no one! – on the SmackDown roster RIGHT NOW believable enough to not only take down The Bloodline, but defeat Roman Reigns and take the Universal Championship off his shoulder. Not Brock Lesnar. Not Drew McIntyre. Not Sami Zayn. Not Jeff Hardy. Not Shinsuke Nakamura. No one on the roster has that “he really could be the guy to take him down” feeling. With the news of Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns plans to have a multi-match series that begins at the Day 1 pay-per-view on January 1st, my heart immediately sank at the thought of possibly having to sit through another Reigns-Lesnar match at WrestleMania 38.
With WWE’s looming problem of being unable to cultivate and build new stars, their inability to creatively give fans storylines that we can sink our teeth into, and failure to provide us with matches that we can easily place in our Matches of the Year lists, it’s easy to see from my perspective that it’s an inevitability that more than likely, it will end up being Drew McIntyre taking the title off of Reigns and being the hero. That’s all well and good, but I know of one man that if Vince McMahon ever had the balls to want to build a brand around, he could do it with this man. That man is none other than….
